W. Va. man guilty of verbal assault on mining foes
BECKLEY, WV (AP) - A bare-bellied man whose foul-mouthed taunting of environmental activists was captured on film last summer has been convicted of verbal assault.
Raleigh County Magistrate Richard Jones convicted 24-year-old Adam Pauley of Daniels after a three-hour trial Friday and fined him $100. Pauley also must serve six months of unsupervised probation.
He was acquitted of public intoxication and disorderly conduct.
Pauley was arrested in September over a July 4 incident on Kayford Mountain, where mountaintop removal mining activist Larry Gibson was hosting the Mountain Keepers Music Festival.
A YouTube video shows Pauley shouting expletives and goading people into fighting. At one point, he appears to curse at a child and draw a finger across his throat.
